On September 16th, Michael Alcorn, professor of Department of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences of Queen's University Belfast, and Feng Yi, senior international officer of the International Department, visited our School on invitation. The two parties held a symposium on the education and academic cooperation and had exchanges with the head of the School, postgraduate students, and the staff of the International Department of Lanzhou University in Mingdao Building.
Lu Xiaobing, party secretary of the School, expressed a warm welcome to Professor Alcorn and showed expectations for the cooperation and exchanges between the two parties in fields of education and scientific research. Professor Alcorn and Feng Yi introduced Queen's University Belfast from the aspects of educational scale, characteristic disciplines, and international ranking, etc., and gave details on curriculum and characteristics of linguistics, English language and literature, translation, Undergraduate and Master's joint training programs, such as “4+1”, “3+1+1” and “1+1+1”. The two parties have reached preliminary cooperation intentions on joint training programs, teacher exchange visits programs, scientific research interaction, and short-term student exchanges programs. Professor Alcorn also visited the lecture hall and the history museum of the School, after which he was impressed by the School’s history and development and then wished a closer cooperation on teaching and academic exchanges with our School.
Located in Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland, Queen's University of Belfast was founded in 1845 authorized by Queen Victoria and it is one of the oldest universities among the UK and Ireland. As one of the members of the Russell Group, known as the British Ivy League, the university ranks 173rd in the 2020 QS World University Rankings and 8th among research universities in the UK's official six-year scientific evaluation. The Department of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences consists of the School of Art, English and Languages and other schools, among which the School of Art, English and Languages offers undergraduate and master courses on translation, interpretation and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). The master's translation courses cover literary translation, translation ethics, drama translation, translation and media, online text translation, public service interpretation, court interpretation and translator training. With the teaching mode featuring regular seminars and small class teaching, the master course enrolls students in the direction of Chinese-English translation.
